Sarah Sohl
Sarah Sohl's the name of my avatar, not very creative but extremely easy to remember : )
I played around with my avatars appearance. Took a lot of default make up off of her, it reminded me too much of the rubber make up that Barbie used to come with. I kept the jeans, cause why not, and changed the shirt to something a little less boring. The hair I actually acquired from someone who approached me in the game. She said I had "newbie hair" and gave me a few styles to try on and use.
For me it was pretty easy to use the navigation controls, teleporting, sitting, and stuff. The hard part was understanding the use or function of the things in the game. I'm still not totally sure what some of the random labeled balls are for. Also, I tried doing a whole bunch of location searches for things I might be interested in like "arts, graphics, camping," and it didn't come up with anything. I'm not really sure on how you find an appropriate location to go to unless all of them are just clubs and virtual hook-up spots.
I wouldn't have much positive to say about Second Life if it wasn't for my experience finding Philosophy House. I stumbled upon it in one of my random searches trying to find a use for Second Life. It was a bunch of people conversing about some of the recent things we've been talking about in the Ethics course I'm in. I stayed and contributed and, thus, met the person who gave me new hair, non-newbie hair. I told them I was there for a school assignment and they actually explained a lot about Second Life to me. She was so helpful I was almost skeptical why. They showed me how to do certain functions and encouraged me to come back anytime I'd like. It was quite refreshing to find a helpful person amongst so much crap.
